Isabelle Cellier is always surrounded by threads. Born in 1967 in Amiens, her father worked in the textile industry as an engineer. She studied Plastic Arts in Lille and Paris, years during which she could not follow the textile path but painting. As time went by, and especially after finishing her studies, ISE got closer to textiles again, with which she learned to compose as a self-taught artist. She developed her own practice of mixing printmaking and sewing. In the 1990's, she managed to recover a large stock of printed fabrics with which she was able to transform her work, creating a particular dreamlike world in which the dream takes a large place. In addition to textiles, ISE has worked extensively with charcoal, ink, engraving and drawing. With their embroidery and beadwork of all kinds, the works of the artist ISE create an impression of déjà-vu, from another time or another era, which tell silent stories, with an almost deceptive omnipresence of faces and portraits. An archaic symbol, the totem is an allegory that she likes to retranscribe in her seams, like The Double Umbilical (2015), bringing back a theatrical side to her figures that can sometimes form a parade, anchored or flying, when put together. Inspired by Coptic art, we can see in ISE's work a rich representation of Middle Eastern Christian imagery, but also a touch of the circus that she draws from Fellini's La Strada, which overwhelmed her as a youngster. The artist has been deeply influenced by the works of Kiki Smith, Odilon Redon, Line Vautrin, without necessarily seeing a copy in hers. ISE's creative process begins after reading a book or a poem that takes her into a world that she uses as a key. New themes emerge and give way to dreamlike creatures assembled with wool, velvet, beads, braids, fabrics and dozens of other pieces, in a rapid and irrefragable movement, without hesitation.
